Candle Care & Maintenance 101

How To Get Your Money’s Worth

Who here has purchased a candle that smells so delicious that you’re too scared to burn it? We know we definitely have! Lucky for you, we have experience caring for candles and these simple tips + tricks will help make your candle last longer so you can get the most out of it!

Basic Care

Starting At The Beginning When burning your new candle for the first time, let it burn for a few hours so the candle can create a melt pool. Once the melt pool begins to reach the inside edge, you can blow it out or continue use. This process usually takes around 2 hours, but time may differ depending on temperature and humidity. After the first burn, you will want to make sure the melt pool is completely re-established. Re-establishing this melt-pool will prevent tunneling (when the wick burns straight down the center of a candle) and allow your candle to properly burn.

Wick Trimming

Trimming the wick isn't THAT important. WRONG. Ever curious why your candle is smoking more than usual or struggling to stay lit? If so, the wick most likely just needs a little trimming. You can trim the wick using a pair of scissors or you can visit our shop to purchase your very own wick trimmer for only $13. If you’re someone who enjoys burning candles often, a wick trimmer is going to be your new best friend!

When trimming, try to keep the wick trimmed to ⅛” to help keep a reasonably sized flame for longer burn time and more importantly...safety! We recommend trimming after every burn or every 4 hours. If using scissors to trim, it can sometimes be difficult to get an even cut which is why we recommend using a wick trimmer. If you’re worried about the wick falling into the melt pool, we suggest waiting to trim until the next burn. You can trim before lighting which will allow an easy clean up if the used wick falls onto the candle. This trimming process will also prevent your wick from bending into the melt-pool after burning so your candle can stay fresh!

How To Use A Wick Trimmer

Wick Trimmers are easy tools that allow an even, straight trim. Simply open your wick trimmer with your thumb and index finger, align with wick and cut. Your wick trimmer should catch the wick after being trimmed for a mess-free cut and you can dispose of it in the trash!

Keeping Clean

One of the reasons why we love soy wax so much is because it is easy to clean! If you accidentally knock over your candle or spill the melted wax, simply take a paper towel and some soap + water and gently remove it. To keep your candle clean before & after burns, we recommend keeping the lid on. Because our candles are purchased with wooden lids, make sure the flame has been extinguished and give the melt-pool a few minutes to cool. Keeping the lid on before & after burns will keep your candle from collecting dust/dirt throughout the air.

Where Should I Keep My Candle?

In order to keep your candle clean and prevent bumps, keep your candle in a cool, dry place. Avoid placing your candle on window-sills or other areas where heat can get to it.

Repurposing

Did you know you can repurpose your candle jar? We love recycling our adorable candle jars and using them as storage solutions at the office and in the bathroom - they are great for holding cotton-swabs or toothbrushes! Another great way you can repurpose your jar is by turning it into a pot! Our jars are the perfect size for succulents or small indoor plants. Want in on the fun? Follow these simple cleaning steps…

You can start by placing the jar in the freezer after completely burning the candle. After a few hours, you may remove the jar and begin to chip out the leftover wax + wick with a butter knife. We recommend gentle, soft pressure so the jar doesn’t get scratched. If you there is a lot of wax to remove or you’re having trouble, place the candle jar in a warm oven. This will allow the wax to liquify and you can then dump the wax out. Wipe jar clean with a paper towel or napkin and rinse any residue left with soap + water or place in dishwasher.

If followed, these simple and easy steps will make sure your candle burns cleaner, for longer. For your safety, we want to remind you that candles should always be burning insight to prevent fire and should be out of reach from children and pets to prevent injury.
